One of the good things about the recent Montgomery Advertiser article on homebrewing was that it caught the attention of a local business manager who had a ton of free bottles to give away. He contacted the Auburn Brew Club about the bottles, and now we have around 1,000 cases of 12oz, plain-jane, crown-cap, brown bottles with no raised lettering, making them perfectly compatible for BJCP sanctioned competitions. We’d name the benefactor specifically but have been warned about some commercial vendors out there who will hound such a company for free stuff in the future, only to turn around and sell it for profit. Sold at retail, these bottles would go for around $10 to $13 per case, or a total of possible $13,000, but it gives us great pleasure to give these bottles away for free to area homebrew clubs!!! Special thanks to everyone from the Auburn Brew Club (Christian, Scott, Tyler, Nathan, Ben L, Michael J, Priscilla, Rob B, Harold, Mitch, Mike C and Michelle) who stepped in to help unload these bottles, one case at a time, into our 10×20 storage room, which is now filled wall-to-wall, front-to-back, floor-to-ceiling. Happy bottling!

Scott received another 2nd place this past weekend. This time the competition was the 20th annual Bluff City Brewers & Connoisseurs Homebrew Extravaganza, and Scott placed in the English Pale Ale category with his Extra Special Bitter. There were 165 entries, and I believe he only submitted a couple of entries. Way to go Scott!

Trouble’s a-brewin’
Home brewers try to change state law
By Rick Harmon • April 20, 2008

John Little of Auburn was named the best home brewer in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia.
As he examines documents in a posh east Montgomery boardroom, John Little doesn’t look like a criminal.
There are few states outside of Alabama where he would be one.
In other states, he has been honored for what he does. Last year he was recognized as the 2007 Mid South Master Brewer of the Year, which designated him as the best home brewer in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia.
He doesn’t deny being a criminal — at least in Alabama. He does deny being the best brewer.
“There are friends of mine in Alabama, mentors of mine, who are far better than I am. They just didn’t choose to enter (the competition),” said Little, who lives in Auburn, but commutes to Montgomery to work at Kaufman Gilpin McKenzie Thomas Weiss.

Here is the main article in today’s Montgomery Advertiser. It is THE front page article and carries over to page 13A.
Coming to a head
Beer drinkers make inroads
By Kym Klass • and Rick Harmon • April 20, 2008

Mike Johnson pours a sample beer during a meeting of the Auburn Brew Club.
Two years ago, a bill to raise the level of alcohol in beers sold in Alabama was so dead that the House presented it the Shroud Award for the “deadest bill” of the session.
Now, the same bill has passed the House, and proponents believe it has the votes to pass in the Senate if it can be brought up for a vote.
Sen. Larry Dixon, R-Montgomery, said he doesn’t know of any other bill that has been given the Shroud Award and “come back.”
“This would be unique in that way, if it were to pass,” he said.
