Website Issues

The Auburn Brew Club is made up of homebrewers who meet together in person to discuss and enjoy each other’s brews. The website is just a way to share information with the public, and the email list is a way to facilitate communication between members.

  1. Email Discussion List
    • A request to join the Auburn Brew Club listserv is made by sending an email to brewtalk-subscribe at auburnbrewclub.org. It is not necessary to put any text in the subject line or body of the email. In fact, the system disregards any such text.
    • Once you make a subscribe request, an email will be sent to the email address you used to make the request asking you to confirm your request. Just follow the instructions included in that email.
    • After you confirm, your request will be forwarded to the listserv administrator for approval. Ideally, there should be some meaningful communication with the club before subscribing to the listserv, preferably attendance at a meeting although as we’re just getting started it is pretty much an open door, and an expression of interest is good enough. However, as we get more and more subscribers, we’d like to ensure that that our listserv subscribers are genuine local homebrewers and not unknowns monitoring for some other purpose.
    • Once you’re able to send mail to the group, please introduce yourself. Tell us about your brewing history, your next goals, etc. Its always great to get to know other homebrewers.
    • Confirmed and approved subscribers can view the listserv archive. The archive is private, so the password provided to you at signup is necessary.
    • Listserv subscribers can send messages to the entire list by addressing an email to brewtalk at auburnbrewclub.org.
    • When replying to a message sent to the list, please delete the extra unnecessary text automatically included in replies by your email client. This just makes reading easier.
    • Obtain a description of other listserv commands by sending an email to brewtalk-request at auburnbrewclub.org with the word help in the subject line.
  2. Member Blogs
    • Regular active members can have their own personal blog on this site. Just ask.
    • Create an account of your brewdays, your competition results, your impressions of a commercial brew or whatever. Have fun.
    • The main site will be likely be configured at some point in the near future to pull in the most recent headlines from each member blog into one spot so we can easily view new entries from across the system.
  3. The Main Site
    • Main Site vs. Member Blogs
      • Any member who regularly comes to meetings and maintains his/her own blog on the site, and therefore is both an active member and understands how the site works, is very welcome to create content on the main site.
      • The difference between the main page and the member blogs is basically that the main page should be somewhat more instructional or announcement-type content coming from the club, while the member blogs are personal and can be anything, even trivial, non-brewing stuff.
    • Photo Gallery
      • Anyone who can create content on the main site can add photos to the Photo Gallery.
      • If you’re not too interested in having your own blog or contributing other content to the main site, but wish to have photos posted to the Photo Gallery, just email your photos to one of the other members who can load them into the Gallery. Just provide a Title and Description for each photo you want uploaded.
    • Event Calendar
      • Alright, its not the best Event Calendar, but it works for now.
      • Anyone who can create content on the main site can create an Event in the Calendar.
      • Be sure to use appropriate html code in the description of the Event, including any necessary paragraph codes, line breaks and hyperlinks.
      • Site visitors can browse Events for the current month and scroll forward to view future months.
      • Click on an Event in the Calendar. More details about the event will then display underneath the Calendar.
  4. @auburnbrewclub.org Email Addresses
    • Regular active members can have their own @auburnbrewclub.org email address. Just ask.
    • @auburnbrewclub.org email can be accessed either via a web browser interface or via a desktop email client such as outlook, eudora, etc.
    • The incoming mail server is mail.auburnbrewclub.org, and it is POP, not IMAP.
    • The outgoing, or SMTP, server is also mail.auburnbrewclub.org.
    • Email can be accessed via web browser at http://www.auburnbrewclub.org/webmail. You have to supply your email address as the username and your chosen password to log in.
